Japanese Poetry Recital: Whispers of Japan
Poem Selection:
Participants are invited to select poems from the Japanese poetry canon, including beloved classics and lesser-known works by renowned poets. Styles may include waka, haiku, tanka, shi, or modern Japanese verse. The full recital will last between 45–60 minutes.
Program & Introductions:
A printed program will include introductory information. Verbal introductions should be limited to one or two sentences, only as necessary.
Performance Style:
Poems should be memorized and presented through one of the following forms:
-
Declamation (spoken with expressive clarity)
-
Singing or chanting (e.g., shigin style)
-
Reenactment by a performer portraying the poet or a character associated with the poem.
Language & Translation:
Poems may be recited in Japanese or regional dialects, with an accompanying English translation provided verbally or in print.
Honorarium:
An honorarium of $50 per poem (up to five poems) will be offered, including translation if applicable.
Purpose & Atmosphere:
This recital honors the poetic spirit of Japan across centuries — from courtly elegance to seasonal reflection, from quiet longing to bold modern voices. Some audience members may recognize a poem by heart; others may be hearing it for the first time.
Dramatization is encouraged: singing, chanting, instrumental accompaniment, dressing in character, or other forms of poetic embodiment can make your recital truly memorable.
Final Poem Selection Deadline:
Please submit your final poem selections by October 4, 2025, so we may prepare the printed program.
